Build a board
Build an interactive board with charts, filters and controls your team can use.
The board presents cells from the same Explore; it is not a separate analysis.
Before you start
- Open an Explore you can edit. Have the results you want to show ready and checked.
- For a datasource-free practice board, use the title, total and chart from Edit an analysis in a notebook. After the price correction, the total and chart should both represent 56.
1. Choose the outputs readers need
Start with the main result and enough context to interpret it. For the practice board, use the title, total and chart. Include units, dates or filters in a Markdown cell when they matter to the result; readers should not have to reconstruct them from the editing conversation.
From the Explore's View, select Edit and open Notebook. Inspect the cells' source and outputs. Run any cells that need updating, then check the resulting values before presenting them. A displayed output can come from an earlier run.
Add filters and controls
Give teammates a way to explore the data themselves. For an analysis with regional revenue, ask the agent:
Add a Region dropdown with an All regions option
selected by default.
Use its selection to filter the data behind the revenue
total and chart. Keep both connected to the same filter.
Put the dropdown in its own cell so I can add it to the board.Choose controls that fit the question:
| Let readers choose | Control |
|---|---|
| One region, product or status | Dropdown or radio buttons |
| Several categories | Multi-select dropdown |
| A reporting period | Start and end date pickers |
| A threshold or scenario value | Number input or slider |
| A search term | Text input |
| Whether to include a category | Checkbox |
You can also create a control with Add input cell in Notebook. Its value must feed the query or calculation behind the result; placing it beside a chart does not connect them. Changes rerun dependent cells, including database queries. UI elements and filters shows how to connect controls in code.
Decide what All and an empty selection should mean. Test a known selection against the underlying data, then restore the default you want readers to see.
2. Add them to Layout
Hover over each selected output and control cell in Notebook and select Add to layout. Open the Layout tab. The new cards appear below existing placements, so scroll down if you do not see them immediately.
If the cell action is hidden, select Show side panel, open Settings, and enable Cell actions. Wait for the editing session to be ready. This display setting does not grant edit permission.
You should now see the selected notebook cells as cards. Supporting calculations and queries can stay in Notebook without appearing on the board.
3. Arrange and resize
- Drag a card by the grip at its top. Put the title above the results.
- Use a corner handle to make the title span the board width.
- Make the total compact and place the chart beside it. Give the chart enough room for its labels and values.
- Check the board at the window width your colleagues will use. Enlarge any card with clipped text, crowded axes or an unreadable table.
Place filters above the results they affect. Give each control a clear label, such as Region or Start date, and make its current selection visible.
Cards may shift when you move or resize a neighbor. In Settings, Layout > Gravity controls whether cards pack upward to close gaps. Turn it off if you need vertical space, then check the positions again.
To omit a card, hover over it and select Remove from layout. Its source and dependencies remain in Notebook. Delete cell removes the cell from the notebook, so do not use it just to change the board.
4. Preview in View
Select View in the editor header. With placed cells, View shows the board grid without layout editing handles.
Check that the title explains the result, the cards are readable, and the values match the notebook outputs. In the practice board, the total and chart should both represent 56. Change each filter and confirm that the intended totals, tables and charts update together. Try a selection with no matching rows and make sure the board makes that clear.
View lets readers use existing controls. Return to Edit to change notebook cells or their placement. A reader who runs a database-backed interaction needs their own query access; sharing the Explore does not grant datasource credentials.
Interactive filters need a live Querio session. Public links and public iframes show saved results without live filter execution.
5. Share the board
Finish execution and resolve any save error. Reopen the Explore and confirm the selected cards, positions and results. Layout changes do not rerun calculations, so recheck affected outputs after changing the source or data. Explores explains saved results and live execution.
Then use Share an Explore or board to set the audience and check the board with an intended recipient. Omitting cells from Layout is not an access boundary for the Explore's source or data. Review the full Explore before sharing it, especially through a public link.
If a colleague wants to develop a separate analysis from the board, see Explore from a board.
If the result is unexpected
| Symptom | Next check |
|---|---|
| Layout is empty or a new card is missing | In Notebook, check Add to layout on the intended cell. New cards may be below existing ones. |
| Cards jump upward | Review Layout > Gravity in Settings and check neighboring cards. |
| You cannot move or resize a card | Return to Edit and open Layout; View has no layout editing handles. |
| A removed card's calculation still runs | Remove from layout changes presentation, not the notebook's dependencies. |
| The board shows an old value | Inspect the source and execution results in Notebook. Run the affected analysis and check its new output. |
| A filter changes but the chart does not | Check that a separate query or calculation cell reads the control's .value and that the chart depends on its result. Inspect execution errors and disabled cells. |
| A filter is missing from the board | Add its cell to Layout, then check its label and placement in View. |
| View shows a notebook list instead of a grid | Confirm at least one cell has a layout placement and that the change saved. |
| A recipient can read but cannot query | Check their datasource permission and credential assignment; see credential selection. |
